OK, this "comment" thing is tricky over herein hickville ...i dont see my first comment...so here it is again -
Is Mana the bone of the Mana Ray ? haha...or is it what you make Mana Bread out of? haha....Write, girl and tell us more details! Did you actually learn how to do the artwork? where were you when you did this? Fill us in, its Mana-datory !
Mana is one of those words that's hard to define in English; as such, I dont have a real firm grasp on it. There are different kinds of mana: you are born with it; you can be given it; and you can accrue it through actions... it is the spirit, power, prestige of something. I meant it to mean I made the hei matau in the traditional manner from the heart and imbued it with my spirit, so to speak (or literally, if you're Maori I suppose) and in theory it accrues (or loses) mana over time
The bone itself was a happy grass fed New Zealand cow not too long ago.
The Maori do have a very common spiral design called "koru" which is a symbol for growth, harmony, new beginnings. It is a depiction of waves on the ocean.
What is mana? I looked it up on wikipedia and it got complicated.
